We Can-Do it… and we did it!!!
The grand opening of the Can-Do Playground on July 11, 2007, celebrated a first for
Delaware and the 100th anniversary of Rotary International. The result: All of the
feel-good vibes, joy and pride that either would generate--times two.
Several small children who had waited patiently during opening ceremonies rushed
onto the public playground with delight the second they received the go-ahead, doing
what happy kids do and what the planners intended. The top-of-the-line, barrier-free
playground is designed as a place for children of all abilities to join in the fun
with friends and family in imaginative, interactive and dramatic play. Several parents
of children with disabilities expressed heartfelt thanks for the playground, sharing
how much this meant to their children and to them.
Members of six Wilmington-area Rotary clubs who conceived the idea for the playground
as a way to celebrate the Rotary centennial joined government officials, disabilities
professionals and lots of kids among some 300 guests who came to salute the achievement.
The Rotarians were having just as much fun as the kids. Margi Prueitt, past president
of the Wilmington Rotary Club noted: “I’m truly impressed and pleased with the playground
itself. But for me, it’s more fun to see how all of the Rotarians involved are so excited
and proud…as well they should be.”
The playground was built in collaboration with the Delaware Division of Parks and
Recreation; it is located in the new Alapocas Run State Park.
Let’s join the fun…
